About ITEP Course
Integrated Teacher Education Programme (ITEP)
The Integrated Teacher Education Programme (ITEP) is a pioneering initiative introduced by the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) in alignment with the recommendations of India’s National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. NEP 2020 envisions a transformative reform of India’s education system, with a strong focus on strengthening teacher education and improving the quality of teaching across all levels.
Recognizing teachers as the foundation of a progressive education system, NEP 2020 promotes an integrated, multidisciplinary, and professional approach to teacher preparation. ITEP is an important step towards achieving this vision by preparing highly competent, ethical, innovative, and future-ready educators.
ITEP is a four-year integrated programme designed for students aspiring to build a successful career in teaching. The programme combines general education such as B.A. or B.Sc. with professional teacher education (B.Ed.), allowing prospective teachers to develop subject expertise and pedagogical skills simultaneously.
The programme prepares teachers for the Foundational, Preparatory, Middle, and Secondary stages of school education. As envisioned under NEP 2020, by 2030, the minimum qualification for teaching is expected to be a four-year integrated B.Ed. degree offered by multidisciplinary higher education institutions.
One of the key objectives of ITEP is to overcome the limitations of fragmented teacher education by creating a unified, comprehensive, and high-quality framework for teacher preparation. The curriculum focuses on foundational literacy and numeracy, inclusive education, multilingual learning, digital literacy, experiential pedagogy, value-based education, research orientation, and Indian knowledge systems.
ITEP also provides extensive opportunities for field engagement, school internships, practical teaching experience, community interaction, and classroom exposure. This balanced integration of academic knowledge and professional training enables aspiring teachers to develop confidence, creativity, communication skills, and the ability to address the diverse learning needs of 21st-century students.
